Hi,

found out over weekend my fuel tank had developed a small rust hole. Took tank off, drained it and had the hole cleaned out and repaired using liquid metal.

Bit of a noob question - but i dont know myself as i took it off but didnt put it back together.. There were 3 pipes attached to the tank.

1) the main fuel pipe
2) large pipe interneath which didnt connect to anything - overflow or breather i guess
3) small pipe underneath - couldnt see where this was connected too when i took it off and nor could dad who assembled it. Is this another breather? Its located about an inch away from the larger pipe under the tank.

Cheers!

Reserve pipe, does your bike have a on / off / reserve

Fuel return? if it's injection (and then it won't have a fuel tap) it will probably have a fuel return for any unwanted fuel.

On another point, if you have a rusty tank it's well worth fitting an inline fuel filter as the inside of the tank will be swilling with rusty bits you don't want in your carbs / injectors

Hey!

Good news, bad news, good news...

good news - while tank was off, dad found every bolt / screw was loose so tightened everything up. replaced perished fiel pipe, fitted pipes better etc. Bike sounded SO much better even started first time which was a first in 2 years

bad news - we missed a second hole :( Tanks back off being repaired

good news - using the new hole we drained out loads of brown crap so tank is nice and clean. I do have a filter.

Getting seat recovered while tanks being done so in 3 days everything should be good!!!

Ok, its all back together, seat looks great and its running better!

One thing though, i think the tank is vibrating more (on the sides). When i have me legs around it im sure its vibrating more than it did before - not that i ever want kids but i think each ride is making my swimmers special!

Any ideas?

Maybe you've overtightened the bolts? Nothing to dissipate the vibrations then?

There are rubber washer type things that go around the bolts, can't say mine vibrates anymore than the rest of the bike.

Have you thought about a new tank, sounds like you may spend the rest of the bikes days repairing holes in the tank and flushing the rust out the carbs / lines,

Been there done it with field bikes, even run one off a jerry can instead of the tank because the rust was clogging everthing up so often
