ive just turned 16 and need some transport and at the minute the cheapest and quickest method is to get a moped and ive found out that i need to complete a cbt test. theres a place near me that runs this and ive just found out that it costs 80 pounds with your own bike and 120 renting a bike off of them, does this seem dear or is it pretty much the norm? and also anybody who has done there cbt give me any knowledge of what it involves

That's pretty much the standard price.

CBT's easy - it's an hour or so of theory, another hour or 2 of practise riding somewhere private (like a car park) and finally a 2 hour assessment out on the open road. You pretty much have to crash to fail it.

A friend of mine nearly failed his CBT - went through a set of traffic lights on red. The instructor pulled him to one side and told him he'd petend he didnt see that, becuase he'd be the joke of all his mates if he failed his CBT.

When I did mine, the guy told me so long as I didnt die during the test, I'd passed.

Its not a test, its a course.

If you dont get a certificate on the first day, you should be given more training for free (although you may need to pay for the bike hire) until you are judged to be at a competent level.

Those prices sound expensive though - its £68 with own bike and £88 with rented bike at the place I'm doing mine tomorrow.

Yer, those prices are around average including bike hire.

You will probably have to turn up around 9:00, spend 2 hours or something in the classroom learning theory and the advantages of different types of clothing, security gear etc.

Then you will spend a while out on a private car park or strip of tarmac somewhere getting to grips with the bike. Once you are competant enough in performing the basics, starting, stopping, turning, pulling away etc.

Then you will go out on the road with your instructor and ride around for about 2 hours, until he is again convinced that you are riding safely.

Then you have completed your CBT and can ride a learner legal bike with L plates and work towards your theory and practical tests.

The CBT isnt a formal test its a course, you shouldnt fail it, even if you do, the staff will probably invite you back for a second day at a much lower rate if not for free.

cbt is meant to give you enough info so your not a danger to yourself. they make sure you can start/stop/turn/uturn can ride roundabouts safely, you'll enjoy it.

Prices seem to vary for a CBT depending where you live, I only paid £89 for mine and that was with their bike hire.

As said above, you will just learn about road safely on 2 wheels first, getting the right gear etc.

Then you will be talked through how to use a roundabout and what indication is needed and when. You will then go on private land and do some little runs, they will mock up a junction etc with cones, as long as you indicate and perform the "lifesaver" on this part then will then take you out on the road. Just a simple couple of hours in various raod situations, you will have an earpiece so the instructor can tell you where they want you to go etc.

You then come back to the place you started off from, you should be almost guaranteed to pass, get your cert and off you go, off into the big wide world where you will annoy other road users, hold everyone up and generally be an idiot on the road ;)
