Ccleaner doesn't like W8

registry cleaning is always a risky business. i got burned many years ago and thankfully i've grown out of it now. :p

can you not even restore the backup files it creates?

Not in this case. The UAC wouldn't allow me to anything. Funny, it used to work perfectly with W7 and earlier.
Still I have a nice clean install now ! I had to re-download BF3 though because for some reason I don't understand I wasn't able to restore the EA Games folder from backup. Some sort of odd DRM ?

I've been using ccleaner on Win8 for ages without a problem. That includes using the registry cleaner.

Never had any problems with CCleaner and Win8 and I use it all the time, even the registry cleaner, infact used it this morning :) .

Like the links - my UAC and power management were borked. I couldn't delete files or folders. But I've used it for years on W7 and previous versions.

The only problem I've experienced is the one with the Ownership in Windows 8, but I can't confirm it's CCleaner related. Have been using the Take Ownership command ever since, so not much of an issue.

Other than that, I've never seen any adverse effects arising from cleaning the registry. It can certainly go wrong at times, but that's what backups are for. Other times, it will help eliminating problematic issues with the registry, e.g. when you cannot properly uninstall/reinstall a program.

But I've used it for years on W7 and previous versions.

that's not really the point though. under the hood, i'm sure there are lots of changes in the windows 8 registry compared to older versions. although a few people here have used it ok and obviously ccleaner must test it themselves, that can't account for all the different machine configurations out there.

like i said, it's inherently risky no matter how good it's been to you in the past. and what perceivable benefits do you really get from cleaning your registry?

Registry cleaning does more harm than good. You should only use the 'Cleaner' part of the application. :p

Totally do not see the point of this app in this day and age.

If you want to get rid of naughty browsing habits, use Incognito modes that any of the major browsers have!

For temp files use Windows built in. Why would you WANT to clean your registry? 10s of years ago the registry size might of presented a problem, today? Wont make sod all difference.

I used it for cleaning out the temp files and cache, and startup.
I didn't know Windows can clean out cruft as well. Where is that ?

no way! :p ccleaner is far superior at cleaning temp files because it works with 3rd party applications such as other browsers. you can tell it what to keep and delete, exclude files/folders, clear contents of custom folders, save cookies while deleting all the other junk, etc etc....

just don't touch the registry cleaner and you'll be fine.
