Sorry if this had been asked to death, what is the price for the CCNA and is it pure exam based, i.e it doesn't involve any pratical work?

I assume you can't take the CCNP exams until yuo have passed the CCNA?

sorry to be rude mate, but judging from your questions a few days ago, it gonna be a few months before you take the exam.

Its 1 multiple choice exam, or 2, depending if you take both at once. No practical work, but you might be asked what commands to type in, in which case you'll need to play with cisco kit.

Ill be taking it march time, but im only going to book it once im confident. im guessing other users who have just done it will know more info.

I would also like to know how much the exams cost and where they can be booked. As part of my OU degree im doing a CCNA course starting in JAN, and although its part of the cisco academy and i get given hands on experience with the equipment, it doesn't actully give me the CCNA qualification if i pass, so it would be usefull for me to know what sort of price i am looking at to take the exams to gain the CCNA once my course is over.

You can book the exams via Pearsonvue (www.pearsonvue.co.uk) that will give you a list of your local test centers.

You can sit the exam as one exam;
640-802 Cisco Certified Network Associate for £123

or two exams;

640-822 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 for £62
&
640-816 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 2 for £62

The exams are multichoice with a couple of Labs.

Self study, i know how to register and sit the exmas but where is the course work for self study?

Get the Cisco approved Self-Study books off the Rainforest (:()

But unless you have a reasonable understanding of networking (and going by your previous posts, you don't) don't bother with the CCNA and do something Like the CompTIA Network+

I am not asking you whether to sit the exams or not, if i want to sit them i will, i know what i am talking about, a few virtual misunderstandings mean nothing to me. What i want to know is, is there an online equivalent to the approved self-study books?

If Cisco don't officially provide this someone third party must have by now...?

you can get PDF study material from certain places, but (and trust me on this)...

Buy the books - you can write on them, highlight them, read them in bed, on the loo and take them around with you.

I took the CCNP ealier in the year and that was tough, but I was glad to have the books - if you can get the exam certification guides these are more to the point, the other books waffle on a bit in my opinion (but are good if you want more background)

/edit - I'd buy the cisco books unless exam cram have new ones for the CCNA, Cisco seem to know their own stuff pretty well ;)

Yes there are on-line courses and you can do the courses at a lot of colleges as well.

However in the other thread you couldn't do simple subnetting and there will be a lot of subnetting on the CCNA.

Do the Network+ then the CCNA is what I recommend.

Good luck anyway.

The CCNA does start from the ground up, and previous experience of subnetting isn't a requirement. If you tend to rush though things then the Network+ is a good idea, but if not then the cisco self study books will cover everything you need for the exam. Ideally you need some hands on experience with some routers, though at that level you can do that with an emulator like GNS3.

Certain places such as torrents you mean?

rz30 is back \o/ why don't you the 3rd year Comp Sci exams over here at Bristol sure you'd pass them too with your infinite knowledge of peer to peer networks.

To be honest, having used the virtual labs, I'd say that although useful, aren't good enough compared to a proper working environment.

Get yourself a couple of routers and a switch off ebay, and use the proper kit. Did me the world of good. Then you either have the option of selling the kit afterwards (as a CCNA study lab - people always want them) thus getting your money back, or having a proper network setup at home (and to be honest, after you have used cisco kit, you wouldn't want anything else).

As for the books, I'd agree with what was said earlier in the thread, get the real books. Not only is hard copy much nicer to read (I hate "book" reading on screen), but you can (and will want to) make notes.
