Hey up,

Grandad passed a few months ago, now my Grandma is on her own and she's started to get calls from "the gas man" asking when she is in so they can do some work. She even had some arse break in and steal her handbag one time. So, my dad's asked to spec up some CCTV that can be remotely accessed just to keep an eye on things.

We're not going to get away with putting up obvious looking CCTV cameras, and can't do a proper system with DVR and all that as Grandma doesn't want any cameras to begin with and after I set it up, it's my non techy dad that will be monitoring it and "fixing it" if it goes wrong.

- Need to be able to log into it from a remote location and check on things.
- Needs to be very easy to use, Dad's the one that's really going to be checking it, and he isn't the most tech chap.
- Doesn't need a laptop or a PC to use. Dad doesn't have a laptop and Grandma certainly doesn't. I can bring mine for the setup, but other than that it needs to be plug and play.
- Being able to speak over it would be great, which means dad can answer the door for her effectively.

Looking at options, wireless sets would be great but it's going to be a PITA to charge them, and the advertised battery life, I'm sure, is on maybe once a day. Wired ones mean drilling holes into walls in order to keep them charged up, which is also a PITA.

What I've looked at so far.
Blink Outdoor £80 per camera, offering from the 'zon. Look like they are easy to set up, can get a 3 camera system for £80 a camera. Says up to 2-year battery life, so I think we can expect that to be 6 months. Which is fine, I see her at least that often, so can replace/charge up the batteries when I see her. Stores stuff to the Sync Module as well as a subscription plan. Can speak back to people.

Eufy Security 2C £90 per camera, no idea who efuy are but the reviews are strong. 6-month battery life, so 2 months. Has local storage as well as access for free online. Not sure how good the app is, but the reviews say its all good. They can also be wired in, for unlimited power, which means we might be able to plug them in if the battery thing is a PITA.

TPLink Tapo £50 per camera, the cheapest option and I've used TP link cameras before so know how they work. Is not wireless, so means £10+ on USB cables and pinning them to the wall to get them to a plug. has local storage, which could be handy.

Does anyone have any other suggestions at all or experiences?

To be honest, if you want something grandma friendly that just works with little hassle then wired Nest or Ring cameras are probably the way to go. Way more than the above though and there is the subscription.

Nest hello doorbell.

Coupled with a few nest iq cameras either indoor or outdoor.

Nothing is going to be discrete and invisible to the eye though.

The subscription options are cheap and worthwhile. £50 or £100 yearly. For as many cameras as you want.

So it pays to get more cameras and cover everything.

A NVR has high costs as it requires buying one, fitting a large drive 4TB minimum these days and then electricity costs.

Uploading to the cloud only has one downside that it requires a decent WiFi connection all around the home because cameras external to the house will drop signal frequently.

So I had to upgrade access points and positioning.
