All a bit new to this so please dont laugh.....
Just bought an old(ish) laptop of "the bay" for my kids to use, it will only be internet stuff so spec not all that important, cant think what make, model it is at mo (in work) but will post when home.
Been looking at the reviews on the net about the said laptop and seems ok for the use it will have, but i dont think it has a cd drive as they keep saying about it being with the docking station?.
My question is this, been told i need to install an OS (which i have) but of course with no CD drive could prove tricky, could it be linked to my desk top (lan leads/ remote use etc) and use the desk tops cd/dvd drive to install the OS on the lap top?, i know it seems like a dull thing to ask but they do every thing else!, or do i just go and buy a cd/dvd portable drive with usb connection?.
I guess without you knowing what make lap top it is it may be hard to answer so will get back to you......

thanks

What operating system are you planning to install on it? You can create CDless installs of quite a few different OSs using a USB flash storage device to boot from (if the laptop can boot from USB!)

It will be windows 7 basic, was thinking if that was possible but not sure how to go about it and like i said cant think what model laptop and spec it is so not much help to you all, as from booting from USB...not a clue if it can

Well assuming the laptop can boot from USB and you have a USB flash drive >= 4GB then you should be fine! Windows 7 is pretty easy to install from USB if you've got a PC with a CD drive that you can prepare the flash drive on.

thanks for that, cant access the guide from work (bloody ITand its filters) but will look at home, laptop should be here weekend so will have a play and let you how i got on.
Thanks again
