Hi

Can you still buy a budget printer that will print straight on to cd's?

I think Epson used to do one in the past.

Hi

The Canon PIXMA iP7250 does. My ip4950 does and it works very well, and it looks like a very similar machine.

...Yeah the cheap Canons are pretty good for this. Have been using them for years for school concerts and nativities etc.
I prefer the bright white printable discs generally but others with more of 'sheen' to the finish can look good too. Depends on what you want to print.

I have the 7250, prints direct on discs nicely and is also a rather good looking printer so won't look out of place among other worktop boxes. The Wireless works brilliantly as well and has remote control etc from it's control panel in printer properties. I also like the dual internal trays, nothing sticks out at the top or back so you can stash a stack of photo paper and normal paper and not have to deal with anything else.

if you can find a 4850/4950 you will be able to buy much cheaper ink for it

the 7250 is ok, but inks are more.
