CD ROM drive not recognised (win 98)

Hello

Im posting this for a mate who has just built a system for his daughter. Everything works except the cd rom drive doesnt appear in windows 98. The computer shows it is connected at startup but he cannot access it in windows 98. Any ideas why this might be? Thankyou.

Have the drivers been installed? If so, check the autoexec.bat file, there is a line in there, or perhaps its the config.sys that you can choose how many drives your computer can have. It's been years, but i think it'll say something like

DRIVE=<letter>

and you choose what letter to go up to with drives.
I'd check the drivers first though
