CDROM Audio cable burning when connected - an odd one

Currently trying to sort out a problem on a computer here at work. We use a microphone pre-amp for audio input on our computers. I recently installed one of these pre-amp's to a computer and almost immediately after connecting everything up I noticed smoke coming out of the case... I immediately switched everything off thinking the PSU had gone, but after looking inside the case I noticed the CDROM audio cable was incredibly hot and had been fried at both ends.

Never come across anything like this before, and just wondered whether anyone had? and if you have, what turned out to be the problem?

Some voltage issue to do with the PSU perhaps? We have these working fine in other computers, so I'm a bit puzzled as to what could cause this.

Any help is great thanks! :)

How old are these PCs?

Only the Audio cable that goes from the CDROM to the SoundCard no lonmger gets used since Windows XP, and so having it in there is a waste of time anyway.

Plus, since most soundcards have both a line-in and a Microphone socket anyway, then why are you even using a pre-amp at all since the soundcard will almost definitely have one already on it?
