Only the x1950pro which is fair bit quicker, but cheapest on here is £76.

You would get far faster 2nd hand probably for around that price, but if you don't want 2nd hand, then that 8600 GT may be ok at 1024x768, not sure so best to wait for more opinions.

i think its worth paying alittle extra and getting the x1950pro such a good card for its price, as the last poster said the 8600gt might be a better buy but i'm unsure about the card.

i've just bought a new 256mb powercolor x1950gt for £55. the fan is a bit noisey and i can't adjust the speed of it as it doesn't have the capiablilities. if this is a problem you could just spend the extra and get the x1950pro with the accelero x2 cooler. just search on google as ocuk don't sell them, they can be had quite cheap and are pretty much just underclocked x1950 pro's.

when i say noisey it isn't that bad. i have a stock amd x2 cpu fan and a ocz stealth xtream power supply in my case also. i have too fan slots right next to my gpu so the noise can escape easier, it will appear noisier than it is for me. also my brothers stock celeon d 2.93ghz fan is noisier and he is about 5 meters away from me. though my brothers case has really bad airflow so it is louder than usual. if your dad doesn't mind a bit of noise (about 40db or so) then it would be perfect for the price. for such a low resolution 256mb should be fine as well.

well just been to my dads and he has his pc in my old bed room so noise wont be a issue

think ill go with the x1950gt thank you for your comments

id recommend an 8600gt if you need a card on the cheapo, they can be had for under 50 quid delivered, and do offer good features, low power consumption and low heat too. worth it for the price.

i'm doing some benchmarks as i feel like writing my own review on the site i bought it from, i'll test on your dads resolution as well, with no aa, af and then again with 4x aa 8x af. i am testing crysis, oblivion, call of juarez and black and white 2. and to cyber mav- i got this card for £55 in total, vat and delivery included.

system specs:
System specs:
Powercolor x1950GT 256MB
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 @2.35Ghz
2GB OCZ DDR-2 800Mhz RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit

benchmarking in progress :)

i'm doing some benchmarks as i feel like writing my own review on the site i bought it from, i'll test on your dads resolution as well, with no aa, af and then again with 4x aa 8x af. i am testing crysis, oblivion, call of juarez, unreal tournament 3 demo and black and white 2.

System specs:
Powercolor x1950GT 256MB
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 @2.2ghz
2GB OCZ DDR-2 800Mhz RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit

settings:
call of juarez = max settings
crysis = all medium gpu benchmark
oblivion =max settings
black and white 2 =max settings
ut3 demo =max settings for for the demo (retail version may have better graphics)

frames per second in games:

Call of Juarez(max settings):

----------------------------------------------- MAX MIN AVR

1024x768 ----------------------------------------31 17 21
1024X768 4XAA 8XAF-----------------------------28 16 21
1680X1050---------------------------------------27 17 23

Crysis(all medium gpu benchmark):

-----------------------------------------------MAX MIN AVR

1024x768---------------------------------------61 5 25
1024X768 4XAA 8XAF---------------------------18 9 14
1680X1050-------------------------------------24 0 12

Oblivion (max settings):

-----------------------------------------------MAX MIN AVR

1024x768--------------------------------------39 13 29
1024X768 4XAA 8XAF---------------------------38 20 28
1680X1050-------------------------------------30 9 22

Black and White 2 (max settings):

-----------------------------------------------MAX MIN AVR

1024x768---------------------------------------64 15 36
1024X768 4XAA 8XAF---------------------------65 6 34
1680X1050-------------------------------------48 6 27

UT3 Demo (max settings for the demo):

-----------------------------------------------MAX MIN AVR

1024x768--------------------------------------58 21 32.3
1024X768 4XAA 8XAF---------------------------38 15 25
1680X1050-------------------------------------36 14 25

by looking at these results it shows that this card can cut it on 1024x768 for all the games i tested, the frame rate seems playable to me, but when aa, af is applied it becomes unplayable. This card shouldn't have any problems with the new tomb raider game (tomb raider anniversary?). you could try overclocking the card aswell if you felt the need although it is probably not a great idea on a stock cooler.
in most of the games there doesn't seem to be a big gap between 1024x768 and 1024x768 with 4xaa and 8xaf, i wonder why that is? ??? is this normal for a computer like mine?

oblivion is quite good, also star wars knights of the old republic. though i am not sure how an older person would find them compared to me.

forgot to mention in my previous posts, xp preformance will be better than vista.

also the card is 8.5"/21cm long and the powercolor version has a dual slot cooler.
