Cel shading

You know games that use cel shading to make them look like cartoons? Anyone know of a way to get a similar effect in photoshop? So if I had an image that looked realistic I could run it through a filter or something so it comes out looking cartoony. I'm kind of a photoshop noob so sorry if this is a stupid question.

not precisely what you've asked for as i'd like to know the real answer too but if you go on filters > artistic > cutout - this has quite a similar effect when playing round with the attributes.

Not quite what you wanted though.

Thanks that's quite good. I wasn't really expecting a magic bullet that can make anything look exactly how I want it, but that's a good start.

Not a technique but theres some excellent cell shading video tutorials on the following site -

You need to pay for them but they are pretty cheap.

download a program called inkscape (its a vector graphics program), import the picture and then, with the picture selected choose 'path' then 'trace bitmap'. Have a fiddle with the settings, but depending on the picture it can sometimes be a really quick and easy way of doing it.
