Just got one of these for £40 - could this be the next "wolf in a sheep's clothing" CPU that is amazing for stupid overclocks? I have been told I can get 5.5 on air, from 3.46Ghz. Not a bad jump!

It has a 512kb cache, and runs a 533MHz FSB. It is a Cedar Mill core.

If the performance is upto scratch, maybe we have a budget single-core Conroe killer?!

Will keep you posted!

The conroe has much higher performance per clock, so I doubt it'll be better for any apps really, especially things core dependent like Supreme Commander etc. Nice price and clock though :D

Not likely a conroe killer, not even a reasonably clocked Pentium 4 killer tbh. Even with 512kb cache it likely shares the deeper pipleine and cache latencies such as found in Prescotts etc.. never really kept up to date on the features of Netburst Celerons. IMO though a Core 2, say an E6600 even at stock speed might eat it for breakfast at 5Ghz.

Just to let you know I managed 5.30GHz, at 1.6v with the Freezer 7 Pro. Temps were 56 under load, and 43 at idle.

Super PI times are 27s to 1M digits, not bad for a £40 CPU!

Afraid to say people were getting that on Opty 146's 2 years ago.Try 10 seconds which is what the C2D are hitting :D

My E6600 at 3.4 does that in 13 secs, me old Opteron 144 at 2.4Ghz 1.25v does it in 33secs, and it can be run at 2.7Ghz stock volts in a better board, extra 300MHz might come close to your 5Ghz.

Haha but it is a Celeron - I've been nothing but the subject of cheap digs all week :p

Yeah, but 2 years ago an Opteron 146 that could do a 27 sec 1M Superpi would set you back £200. :p

Athlon 64s are cheaper than that. Semprons even more so. Intel really need to fix their Celeron prices...clock for clock they're still completely useless.

The E2140 is only £60 and does that kinda super Pi on stock (29-33 seconds depending on the rest of the system) clock it to 3gig which it does pretty easily and you can get down to 19-21 seconds and I hear they can do 3.6gig...

Yea but today you can pick an Opteron up for cheap, i think a 146 went for 20 quid in the members market this week :D

That celeron is damn good for a £40 processor!
Think about what overclocking means before you slate the mans efforts

In terms of percentage overclock it is good. But what use is it if Celerons are too crippled to compute for ****?

Yea overclock was good and all, but do think of how much it performs even at that speed compared to many cpus you can get cheaper now. One of the reasons it clocks so high is that it dosen't have anything to hold it back, like HT or a lot of cache :D

excellent overclock mate.

beats a 3500+ @ 3050 for super pi by more than a second if you didnt know. For a 27s super pi 1mb time out of an a64 or opteron areant you looking at 3.2ghz with a decent memory speed?

Yet it has to be clocked 66% faster to beat the A64...the netburst arcitechture isn't going to get better with 512KB L2, just look at presler and prescott 2M for proof of that.
