Celeron M 1.5ghz vs centrino ULV 1.1ghz

My wife wants her own laptop (so we can permenently communicate via msn when in seperate rooms thus removing the requirement for verbal discussion).

She says "I don't want it any slower than what we already have"..

so hence the question, I have a vaio t1xpl which has a ULV 1.1ghz centrino and 512mb ram.

She also says "I want a cheap one"

So the cheapies are normally from dell and are 1.5ghz celeron M cpus.. My brain is telling me celeron M cpus are basically like the old style centrinos so a 1.5ghz should be able to keep up with this 1.1 centrino quite happily.

Whats the verdict from this great and lovely forum??

Bear in mind a lifetime of grief and having to hand over the decent laptop is at stake here so make sure you get the answer right!
 
The celeron m is a cut down p-m afaik so id definatley say it would.


What cpu does your current lappy have (centrino isnt a type of cpu)
 
I appreciate centrino is like viiv but it does need to have a certain level of cpu too so I think centrino is a fair description..

either way its technically a pentium M 733 which allegedly has 2mb cache and a 400mhz fsb.

This is against a celeron M 370 which is 1.5ghz with 1mb cache and a 400mhz fsb.

Just typing that out I can see the extra 400mhz on the cpu is at least going to equal the 1mb l2 cache difference isn't it..
 
And maybe some battery life, since the Centrino is a ULV and has better speedstep, but yea, the Celeron M is pretty much a powerful chip. Make sure its a 1mb Dothan, i have 3 Celeron M cpus here and 2 are 1Mb Dothans and ones a 1.5 Banias that has 512K L2. edit nm i see its a 370, so 1mb.
 
she won't notice as long as there's no perceivable difference, the only time it would probably ever tell is when she's on the forum she frequents (which is a lot tbh, probably the whole reason for having the laptop) amusing herself whilst I'm lost in a sea of cables and tubing.

They have lots of threads full of pics and I reckon a standard celeron/sempron would be noticeably slower there than this pentium M.

Its cool though, I'm pretty certain this celeron M will be fine.. like has been said its basically a dothan :)
