I'm new to hi-fi's. what i'm wondering is, will i need to upgrade my amp to an AV receiver to run a center speaker?

A Hi-Fi doesn't have a center speaker, multi-channel home theatre systems do. A stereo integrated amplifier will only power 2 speakers (left and right)

You don't need to replace your existing stereo integrated amplifier to upgrade to multi-channel. Power the L/R speakers with your existing amp, then buy an AV amplifier and use that to power center and rear speakers plus line level to subwoofer. Send pre-outs from the AV amplifier into (ideally) poweramp inputs to your stereo amp, or line level. Match gain and calibrate. Mark the position of the calibrated level on your amplifier with white line. Then whenever you watch DVD's set to that input, set volume to that position. Adjust volume from the AV amplifier, do not move the stereo amps volume. For Hi-Fi reduce volume on the stereo amp then change input to CD etc.
