CentOS 6.2 OpenVM - Critical Problem

Hello,

I am currently renting a dedicated server and have installed CentOS 6.2. Over the past two days I have been trying to install OpenVM (virtual machines) following the guide I found here. I have once successfully managed to install it and set up two virtual machines but I made a big mistake trying to install another piece of software which other people have had issues with and had to reinstall the OS.

Upon trying several times with fresh CentOS 6.2 installations to install OpenVZ I cannot get past the first restart (bottom of the linked page). The system hangs upon the reboot and I get messages from my host saying that the server is down. This leaves me unable to connect through SSH (Putty) or use FTP until I boot into 'rescue mode' which is provided by the host.

I am pretty sure that my problem lies within the '/boot/grub/menu.lst' and '/boot/grub/grub.conf' files where I must enter the name of the kernel. The kernel I wish to use is the second on the list defined in the guide, which is 'vzkernel.x86_64'. I don't think I'm entering the right kernel name/path and don't really know what I'm looking for or how to find it.

Would somebody be kind enough to guide me through this problem?

I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Apologies if I have missed any important details, I am new to Linux and trying to get a server running as soon as possible.

According to the guide you link to installing the vzkernel fileset should automatically update the grub menu file. The guide is only editing it to change the label to be more friendly in the grub menu and setting it be booted by default. You shouldn't be changing the actual kernel line or it's path.

What does your grub menu.lst look like?

OVH by any chance?

Yes, purchased from Kimsufi. So far, so good. I would recommend as the only problems I have had so far were my fault and that's simply because I have no Linux experience. :)

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and have now just started the CentOS 6.2 reinstall. It looks to be working. I will follow the guide once more and send the contents of the files your way and will only restart if it looks fine to you. It has been a pain to get it reinstalled.

I will reinstall Ubuntu then manually install CentOS via VNC.

For some reason when I try to install CentOS with the default partitions, it works. But when I use custom partitions I get this error: http://i.imgur.com/XRNLm.png

These are the partitions I am tying to use.

- Partition 1 -
File System: ext4
Size: 1975424

- Partition 2 -
File System: swap
Size: 24576

I will look into formatting the system and starting fresh. Also, the VNC thing didn't work unfortunately.

How should I set up my partitions?
