I just finished a 4 week, level 3 certificate in emergency response ambulance driving as I am training to become a Paramedic.

Will this advanced driving course reduce or increase my personal car insurance renewal price?

I have never in my life been asked whether i have whatever that course is or not. So i would say that it seems unlikely that it will affect you.

I'll caveat that with the question of whether you will be forced to answer that you are a professional driver or not.

In my experience, being anything near the description of a “Professional driver” will actually increase your premiums, their rationale / excuse / bare faced lie if as your on the road a lot of the time your more likely to have an accident / claim.

My insurance is far cheaper if I declare my profession as paperboy rather than a Class 1 HGV driver....

To be honest the way that HGV drivers try and block you and drive all over the place, blocking lanes when overtaking etc, i'd damn well hope that they'd be penalised. I nearly crashed into one this morning as he tried to block a merge in turn by pulling out of the queuing lane to straddle both lanes and pointlessly block the free one.

/can of worms

.. might declaring yourself as a paramedic, not impact insurance more .... does shift work have higher commuting accident risk ???

To be fair I've also seen my fair share of idiot car drivers who fail to absorb and take into account the situation and give lorry drivers the space they'll need which then 10 yards further up the road will cause the traffic to stop just cause the numpty doesn't understand the dynamics of lorries and how they move. So it's no surprise that lorry drivers do defensive driving in anticipation.

Some of the specialist insurers and brokers have asked if I have any additional driving qualifications, I'd say that CERAD would likely count.

I completed a 4 week police response driving course, for me it made no difference at all when it comes to insurance.

I have the same qualification, it made no difference to any of the insurance companies I have been with.
One tip for when you qualify, if you state you are a paramedic your premium may well rise. Stating ambulance crew doesn't have the same increasing effect.

Depends on other factors with the big one being the insurance company. If theft or uninsured drivers are the biggest liability for your area then probably not. If you as a driver are seen as the bigger liability then maybe.
