Certain start menu shortcuts not working

I have no idea what's going on but notepad, wordpad, paint, mediaplayer, and winamp will not load if i use the start menu. For a second or two the egg timer cursor appears and that's it. I can load notepad, wordpad, paint from start > run and i can right click a image and select open with. Winamp and notepad will also only load by opening an mp3 and txt files. Mediaplayer doesn't want to work at all.

I've done virus/spyware scans and nothing has been found. This is a fresh install from just over a week ago. Just reinstalled winamp to a new version and it's still no go.

Anybody have any ideas? My other 20ish shortcuts are fine.

Pop windows CD in the disk drive

start>run>

and type sfc /scannow go for a coffee and a crasuant. Once its done restart. fingers crossed.. a bit of a long shot tbh but its well worth a shot.

Will try it shortly. Hope it works... if not i'll do the system file check as you suggested. Haven't had to do one of them in a while.

Well Tune Up didn't work. Going to try the sfc now.

Anybody have any last minute ideas before in reinstall XP?
