Challenger Deep - the race

Yeah but going to the grave knowing youre the only man on earth to have been to the deepest place on earth is miles better than going to the grave not being the only man.

Oh wow, only 7 miles? Assumed it was deeper in parts!

Its around the cruising height of a modern airliner

Another interactive article from the Beeb that explains the different depths quite niceley.

For me deep sea exploration is just as exciting as space exploration and according to one engineer who is working on a deep sea submersible project that I am very lucky to know; many of it's engineering problems are a damn site trickier than getting things off the planet.

I've always found it remarkable that we know more about the Moons surface than we do our own Planet.

You won't get larger creatures (if any) at those depths because the constant pressure of all that water will hinder it. Natural selection would make short work of such a creature at those depths.

Unless they're made of some as-yet-unknown substance that 100% completely resists pressure.

I look forward to them finding Atlantis & will Welcome our new web footed Overlords.

There are loads of big creatures in the deep we know about. The big creature would use the same systems the small ones would use. As long as the pressure is the same internally as externally (no large air sacks etc) there should be no issues.

Not sure why there has been this sudden urge to do this?
There has already been one manned descent which found all sorts of creatures.
Also it seems the two teams most likely to do it first are not really scientific trips either.

Not knocking the engineering or the braveness of whoever decides to go, but on the whole I am not sure what they are trying to achieve.
