chances of components being ruined by a PSU?

Just last week, I had the motherboard replaced for my old build and when I switched it on, I heard a subtle high pitch screeching noise then immediately turned the power switch off and unplugged the cable when I heard crackling/melting noise from the PSU...followed by smoke coming out of it.

I assumed it was RIP time for the PSU (OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w) since I got it 3 years ago but I've never had anything die on me like that so now I'm really reluctant to use the PSU from my current build to test if the old build still works...I REALLY hope that nothing got ruined from my old build :S

Any advice before I risk it and test my current PSU (BeQuiet 630W)? I also assumed that the subtle high pitch noise was from the PSU as well (I hope!)?

Not sure if useful but here's the old build (with new mobo):

Geil Value 4GB
AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 620 2.60GHz
Sapphire 5850
Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0

EDIT: did some quick research and the noise was exactly like this
but continuous long whine

Hopefully everything should be ok. The OCZ is a half decent psu and does have protection unlike the cheapo psu's. At the end of the day you really can't be sure until you fire it up with the new psu.

I tested it with the Be Quiet PSU and it booted up fine but then it led to me discovering the possibility of the majority of my old build being dead based on:

1. Dead hdd because on the motherboard the LED light stayed on, indicating that there was a problem with the boot drive. I swapped to an older hdd and the LED light blinked once but there were some weird noise coming from that hdd too. Tested with another and it was fine but again the LED light blinked once.

2. The VGA LED light stayed on, which I assumed there was a problem with the graphics card. After about 30 seconds, the card would boot with the fan at 100% but I changed slots and that didn't change it.

Thing is, I think my old build kinda died when I tried to use it last year to see if it works - everything booted but with a blank screen and the graphics card fan was running at 100%. Then I was told that the motherboard died hence I upgraded it.

I guess it's better for me to upgrade the old build 'le sigh' -.-.
