hi all

have got asus 939 mobo with x2 3800 wivth 3 gb ram not bothered bout overclocking as ram not up to much. so what cpu u could i put in thats faster than i have .i do some gameing and video editing, but thats it.

thanks clembo

Sorry mate, the socket 939 is a pretty big dead-end. You could get a 2.4GHz X2 4800+ or a 2.6GHz FX-60, but this wouldn't be much faster and these generally cost a lot on auction sites.

If you want a cheap upgrade, cast your eye over this board and this CPU. These are MUCH faster than any socket 939 CPU system and don't break the back. However, you will be wanting some new DDR3 RAM as DDR1 pretty much finished with s939.

I think you'll probably end up disappointed with any s939 upgrade. You could go for something like an Opteron 180/185 or X2 4800+, but these will give you a disproportionate speed boost compared to what they'd cost (likely >£80).

Your best bet would be to save up a bit more and replace mobo / CPU / RAM.

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded my parents' S939 setup, replacing the mobo, CPU, memory and PSU (upgrading to an e5300 system) for about £140.

Pretty sound advice here. +1. :)
