I have a Philips 200 LCD which runs at 1680x1050 resolution (16x10 aspect ratio). I also have a 'bedroom' 19" Toshiba TV with PC VGA input and a 16x9 screen. I'd planned to use this as a temporary monitor if the Philips packs up.
But the TV instructions say that the PC resolution should be set to one of a compatible list (not including 1680x1050), and if the PC is in an unsupported mode an OSD will appear.

My question is: If the Philips monitor isn't functioning how do I change the resolution before connecting to the TV? Or should Windows XP detect the TV standard resolution (1360x768) and switch to it?

Thanks for any help on this.

Boot your PC into safe mode. The default resolution should be supported by your TV. From there you should be able to change the resolution to what you want.

Hope this helps...

Oh yes - thank you. I wasn't sure if safe mode allowed resolution changes as it always starts at 800x600 - which as you say is one of the supported resolutions.
