Change of address: who do I need to tell?

Having your licence at your parents address is fine though as long as you are contactable at that address.

Ah, that's what I thought as it would be a bit irritating for Uni students to a) remember and b) pay to change the address every year or so. I just moved out of home but still get quite a bit of mail and whatnot there, just my insurace is declared at my current residence of course. Slowly moving things over, but im just far too lazy.

Ugh, I've also had to fork out another 80 quid to my insurance company. When ringing them up to change my address details, I was forced to admit that my expected annual mileage was likely to be 15000 miles instead of the 5000 I had originally estimated.

New flat deposit, agent's fees, insurance, new license, moving costs... This is going to be a very expensive month. :(

well technically its not because you dont actually live there

but then again, given its your parents address, how would they proove otherwise ? they arent going to hire fraud investigators to disproove you i suppose :D

I've been stopped twice by the police over here and both times they queried the address on my licence as it's in NI. I told them it was my parents address and nothing more was said.

I'm pretty sure the only thing they're worried about is if you get flashed by a camera, you get the fine :p

I've been flashed by a camera and the only fine I got was the £60 going-through-a-red-light fine. They sent the NIP to the address on the V5C.

thats just it thought. they use the V5 for that.

there must be more to it than that.

Oh yeah, so they do. Well they weren't phased by it at all so I suppose y ou can conclude that it is fine to use your parents address. You could just say you live there some of the time if they get arsey.

It's free and hassle free to change the address. So it's easier just to do it.

The requirement is that you live there. It doesn't state that you must live there all the time, nor that it is your primary residence. As long as you live there at least some of the time, it's fine.

Well if you do have to be difficult ;). For uk only people it's easy.
whats the difference with the NI license?
It's issued by the DVLNI which is separate to the DVLA. When you apply to the DVLA for a GB licence they contact the DVLNI to get your details.
When I applied for a GB licence, the DVLA wrote back to me to tell me that I didn't have a car or motorcycle entitlement on my licence. They were going to issue me a provisional licence which technically would have made me a learner again.

Once I got it sorted I gave up and now just stick with my NI licence.

For any cars you own you need to fill in the relevant part of the V5 and send them away. For your driving licence you can do it online here:

Christ, talk about making you jump through hoops. End up having to give them several different numbers from the card and the counterpart, my addresses from the previous three years, and then answer an ambiguous question about what medical conditions I have with the consequence being that you get contacted by the medical team who may ask for further information from a doctor.

Screw it, I'm just sending the card and counterpart back with the new address filled in at the bottom.
