Hey there,

Just looking for a bit of advise and support, im going to try and explain in a way everyone understands, and hopefully i will get some good feedback from different minds.

Im currently doing a national diploma in public services - 18 units. I chose this course because i had a dream of becoming a firefighter but soon relised it will never happen, an example is that the last time there were 2 available placements in cambridge, there were *4000* aplicants. The facts of the stuggle joining the fireservice does not make the image of me becoming a firefighter likley, some could say even impossible.

Theres always been something in the back of mind, something for primary school teaching, ive been doing some medium level research into this subject, i have a close bond with 3 local primary school teachers. In the future i would aim to take a BEd degree in Primary Education.

This leads me to the problem, i need the experiance, ive only observed, theres more details for me to go into but its clear this the future i want to take a

A national diploma in early years would set me up perfectictly for the course i wish to take in the future at university. My friend is currently doing the same course and hes been doing 2 days a week at a local primary school as a teaching assistant helping a child with autisim since last october, which is exactly what i want to do.

Im asking...

Do i complete second year of the national diploma and have something to show for my hard work and efforts then continue into the education i want to persue afterwards, or apply and go for it?

Do i take another route into teaching, are there any primary school teachers here that can advise me?

Is there anyone that has taken this route and gone into social work, child minding? Anyone that relates, just looking for feedback.

Regards, Carl. :)

Rumour has it that the fire service is a good number. Unless your old man's the chief fire officer you may have trouble getting to the front of the queue.

Next option - check out RAF careers info via your local CIO or online etc - The RAF have their own fire service. All operational bases have their own fire sections. Manston Airport, Kent may still be their training HQ. Try googling it..

Other ed course options - City and Guilds 7306 Further and Adult Ed - a 33-week one-evening-a-week course. If they offer you a place you'll be expected to arrange 50 or so hours of practical in-class teaching. Most colleges will assist you in getting the teaching experience lined up. Volunteer for cadet training organisations etc who may offer you the practical teaching 50-hour angle...

Leading on from the 7306, the Certificate of Education - another academic year on top of that for the 7306. Some colleges will allow you to go straight into a Cert Ed. No big deal though - there's usually an option for those completing the one-year 7306 FAE course to go straight into the second year of the Cert Ed anyway..
