i had 8mb line maxadsl with nildram. and it was bad, cutting out, download speeds would drop from 700kb/s to 40kb/s and stay there. so bought a new filter and replaced the old one (was about 6 years old) and hey presto, a stable connection with good download speeds.

can anyone explain how this fix works? do microfilters degrade over time or something?

You probably never had Max before - runs the line closer to the limits, so the fact your 'free' filters were crap in the first place suddenly becomes more apparent.

I noticed a slight improvement when I changed my filters on every phone socket to a single BT filter on the master socket, but that may be because the ADSL signal isn't going all around the house before getting to the router.
