Changed PSU. Now PC won't boot with HDD connected.

My friend's PSU died and l replaced it. I connected the new PSU and attempted to boot the PC but nothing. I tried clearing the CMOS but again, nothing. I starting removing stuff and the PC booting normally when l disconnected the IDE HDD.

The HDD is the only IDE device on PC so there should be any master/slave issues. What the hell is going on? If the HDD was dead then why wouldn't the PC boot and just post an error in the bios?

Any ideas guys?

its not shorting out anywhere on the case is it?

other suggestion would be a dead kettle cable

Could the failed PSU have taken the drive out when it died ?

Have you got another drive you can check it with ?

A friend had similar issues, would not recognise IDE only SATA
