Hi guys,

I was checking the BT site the other day and I noticed that the BTw Guestimator (http://eco.btwholesale.com/broadband1/) has changed? Well for me it has anyway…

It now says that I can get a standard 2 MB connection, even though I wasn’t able to in the past? Before it used to say I could support 1 MB only – because of my line.

Have BT improved my line or something :p

I take it this is just an error at their end?

Any thoughts :)

Same happened to me in october. I was with nildram on 1mb (amber on bt checker). 1mb worked fine never a disconection.

1mb i had 50 att 25 snr
with 2mb i had 50 att 9 snr
max i have 51 att 5-6 snr

Then when in october i did a occasional bt checker thing to see if bt ever upgraded my line and lo and behold it had 1mb as green and not only that but 2mb as well.

I quickly got on email with nildram and told them and they regraded me to 2mb. During the regrade i was in amsterdam. When i got back it was 2mb BUT! I was getting disconections..

I lived with it but got sick of throttling malarky with nildram and their service so migrated away.

Where now im on adslmax not fixed line anymore (grr). Im syncing 3mb but getting 2.2mb speeds. Interleaving was off the first day but just recently from about 2am interleaving was turned on and pings have jumped by 20. :(

Was havin severe disconections with max tho 51 att 5 snr. Without interleaving. Too early to tell if im going to get disconections with interleaving on tho.

I'm half tempted to give a 2 MB fixed connection a go?

2 years ago, when I was with Pipex, they put me on a 2 MB BRAS even though I could only get 1 MB, and I had constant disconnects - and a lot of resulting downtime...

It took them nearly three months to get their finger out and downgrade me :(

I really don't want all that hassle again!

After reading what you've said, it must be a mistake BT's end surely, saying that we can get 2 MB – in the old days they used to say you could have a 2 MB connection with anything less than 43dB snr, or something like that?

Btw at the site sam knows (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php) try just using your postcode. Any bets that it will say somit different compared to when you use the phone number in the checker.

Mine did. Postcode only = 1mb and 3.5mb adslmax able, tel no = 2mb and 2.5mb adslmax able.
Yeah, your right ;)

Just using the postcode says I 'may be able' to have 1 MB :)

Oh well.

Yeah they've all changed now as BT have been doing the exchanges, all i could ever get was 1mb, and about 4.5mb on max a few months ago, then it changed to say i could also get 2mb, and about 6.5mb on max, so i called AOL and told them that it was now saying i could 2mb where as before i could only get 1mb, so could they check, and lo and behold i could, im on 2mb now. :D

I checked the checkers again a couple of weeks ago, and now its saying i can get 8mb or greater max.

Yeah ive just tried what was posted above, with just my Postcode it also said i may get 1mb, i cant get 2mb, but yes i can as im on 2mb now, i wouldn't take any notice of it by just putting your postcode in as its wrong (well it must be as it says i may get 1mb, which ive had before, and it says i cant get 2mb, but im on 2mb now, and by phone number its all greens as said), so id take it by your phone number not postcode. :)

@sam.wheale if its now saying you can get 2mb then you can, as as i said thats what it used to say to me that i could only get 1mb, and 2mb was a no no, but once id seen that it had all changed i checked with AOL to see if i could get 2mb now, and if i could then to put me on it, and they did a line check and said yup i can, so here i am on 2mb. :)

I would go onto max, but i just can't be arsed with the 10 days rubbish, and i don't need 8mb, the 2mb does me.

Thanks for the reply :)

Thing is, has anything actually changed on my line? Because as I said, the last time I was on standard ADSL I was on a 2 MB profile (even though they were only giving me 1 MB) and it just couldn't handle it...

I'm tempted to give it a go though - I miss the good old days of having a consistent connection ;)

basicly if your downstream snr is below 7 most times your going to get disconnection issues. you will have exceptions but thats generally accepted as the case.

so if any of u have 5 even 6db snr and your getting disconnections thats the reason.

Well my 2mb connections fine, never ever had a disconnection, BT have been out working on the exchanges, thats how i got 2mb now when i couldn't before.

You can check by doing what i did, just phone your ISP and get them to do a line check for the 2mb (if your on 1mb now, and your interested in the 2mb), then if they say yeah you can get 2mb, ask them to put you on it like i did. :)

they put me on a 2 MB BRAS

No they didn't. You were synching at 2Mbps.

If it didn't work then, it's unlikely to work now. Any more than the 8Mbps the Guesstimator reckons this line could do.

BT have been out working on the exchanges

Unlikely (especially given "working on the exchanges" wouldn't make an ounce of odds). It's much more probable that your line would've done 2Mbps without a problem anyway, and the database needed updated to reflect that.
