Changing a 3.6ghz e8400 for q9450? updated

Rest of system is in the sig, and it wont cost me a lot, would i be able to get 3.6ghz+ with one of these chips ? i do miss having 4 cores sometimes as i do quite a bit of image work so i think it would be worth it for me!

Cheers for any imput guys

//edit actully have one now... no luck overclocking tho, i mite make a new thread

you should be able to do 4GHz,aslong as you have good cooling :)i always find a QC slightly faster than DQ :)

I think Cob managed to get 4GHz out of his but he had to crank up the VTT to something silly like 1.6v to get it prime stable, I'd say that 3.6GHz would be reasonably easy to get but above that I'm not so sure.

Anything over 3.6ghz is pretty much dependent on your motherboard. 3.8ghz would be the max with good air-cooling.

Either you have a very poor E8400 or it's your motherboard limiting you to only 3.6Ghz, meaning you'd likely have the same issue with the quad.

i had it at 3.8ghz for quite a while but my old flat was a bit warm, i could probbably put it back now im at home again, i should imagine 4ghz would be acheivable with enough messing, just want to know im not going to struggle with it like

Well im having terrible luck with this q9450 lol! wont even do 400 x 8 at stock volts at the moment, what settings is everyone else using ? ended up resulting to leaving it on auto which set the voltage to 1.3v just to get it to boot into windows :(

Using 1.37vCore on mine for 3.5ghz, boosted some other voltages. Ran OCCT for 6 hours before I decided that was enough when I got back from work today.

i would just wait for the price drop and get the q9550 if your looking at a 45nm quad, you get a 8.5x multiplier rather then an 8x

It's really hard to say if you will get 3.6ghz or not from it, but that is not the main point here.

If really the main stuff you do is graphic works, and if you use software that can use all 4 cores at max then the quad will be better even without clocking it high due to 4cores and more cache.

But I mean when you really work with it, not just play around with photoshop every now and then ;).

If you dont do any serious graphic work then don't bother upgrading.
