Hi All

I have a DivX file (.avi) that contains footage which is 16:9, but it has been encoded with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Is there any way I can convert / re-encode to give the footage it's correct aspect ratio?

Thanks

Si.

As said you could do it in Virtual Dub but you would probably have to re-encode which will obviously lose quality. It would be better just tell the player to overide the aspect ratio and set it to 16:9 imo.

I've had a go with virtualdub but I'm not familiar with it - any pointers?

The footage will be played on a DVD player (as a DivX file), so the option to override the aspect ratio isn't there.

It is a little tricky but I think what you need to do is the following:

1) Open the file in virtualdub
2) Make sure the audio menu is set to "Direct Stream Copy", there's no need to mess with the audio here.
3) In the Video menu make sure "Full Processing Mode" is selected
4) In the Video menu go to Filters then Add and pick Resize from the list. Unfortunately you'll need to do the maths to get the correct height and width
5) Again in the Video menu go to Compression and pick Divx, hit configure and set any Divx settings you want.
6) Pick File/Save as AVI and let it do its stuff
