Ok I derped on moving to z87 from x79...

My windows 8 install on my ssd is from an x79 install, would I get away booting to safe mode and then using the windows 8 utility to perform a clean install?

Haven't a clue where my windows 8 key is or where I stored the disc image :o

Might be but you can swap chipsets without clean installing on Windows 8. I went from x58 to z79 without any issues. Reactivation will be required though.

You might get away with not having to do anything. You'll need the key if Windows ask you to reactivate.

I did exactly this on Windows 7 but I played it safe, this is how I did it:
- After building the computer, I booted straightaway into SAFE MODE (F8 during Windows boot). This will load basic drivers for the motherboard.
- Uninstalled every driver software from "Programs & Features" that were related to my old motherboard. Then rebooted.
- Booted into SAFE MODE again but this time installed all the latest drivers for the new motherboard. Then rebooted the computer.
- Booted into normal Windows to have any other hardware detected/installed properly.

One of the main things about the Z87 chipset is native Intel USB3 support which are separate drivers.

Cheers guys, I should have the key floating about in my inbox somewhere should I need it.

I just remember Windows 7 going completely mental when I moved from Z68 to X79 :p

:)

Windows 8 is generally quite good at adapting to hardware changes. At work we image systems and can get by with one image for the majority of systems. If it detects a hardware change, It will show a getting ready style page when you next boot up where it installs drivers.

Of course this is my own experience, Your mileage may vary.

Sorted, was very very painless, got an 'updating system' screen up on first boot, took a few mins then I'm back in windows and everything is as I left it!
