hi guys

currently have a 3.00Ghz P4 processor (with hyperthreading), but i have access to a dual core 2.6GHz processor,

both are the same socket 775 LGA so i gather it will physically fit on my board, but what about run?

would this be too much hassle for little gain? what is involved when "changing" a cpu?

any help is appreciated thanks.

thanks for reply guys, im some what relieved as i have had some bad encouters with bios updates etc, however with regards to your questions

the new cpu in question has come from gigabyte GA-EP43 DS3L socket LGA 775 mobo and my mobo im using now is a MSI MS7235-060 P965,

looking at the data manual it does say it my mobo supports quad core/dual core, if socket 775

the task of fitting the cpu im capable with, with the hope its plug n play

thanks for all your input guys, the other cpu in question is a E7300 wolfdale, and is listed under the compatible cpu for my mobo :)

could it really be plug n play?

with regards to "lithography" what does this mean/describe?

didnt know they compared the very two processors, thats great,

yeh i heard about changing the affinity.. thats in the processes menu i think, set 1 core for 1 process and vice versa, sounds good

on another note, currently have 2x 1gb ddr2, (pc2-6400) 2x 512mb ddr2 (pc2-5300) - (total 3gb) (4 slots)

a) is this enough to run alongside the dual core?
b) as my board doesnt support ddr3 :( what could/would be the best improvement?

some good and bad news

good news is, i bought some more ram, so in total have 6GB

bad news is i had some time to work on pc today and tried the new cpu and got nowhere :(

fitted like a dream, new thermal paste on etc turned on... everything running (fans, lights etc) but no beeps and no display, however .. swap back to the old cpu and everything as it was.. from this i can presume its the bios (unless im missng something)

however as this is 2012 and the use of floppy drives no longer around, it getting bit tricky to load the bios, the driver from the cpu listed above, we think is incorrect, as my current bios is an award version so requires a different bios,

tomorrow i will connect a floppy drive, and boot up using a floppy disk, and fingers crossed we get somewhere
