My XBox has started playing up where it will only read discs when it feels like it, have tried cleaning lens with cleaning disc which didn't do much so wondered is it worth changing the drive over for a new one or just bite the bullet and get a new XBox 360 as in a few weeks i can get a discount on a new one

Personally I think you are better off changing the laser instead of the whole drive because the drive is coded to the xbox and you'll have to faff about coding the new drive so that it works. I replaced my laser and its easier than it sounds, just make sure you buy the proper drive that matches your current one and its just a straight swap.

If you can find an exact match of the drive, you can swap the control board from the faulty drive, onto the new drive, and don't need to match the coding.

If the fault is actually with the control board, then slightly more difficult.

Might even just need a pot tweak.

Give us more info to properly advise you, OP.

Firstly, is it still in warranty? If not, what drive is it?
