Changing equipment so it all matches

Just seen a post in the MM.

The guy is selling his amp so he can get a Sony, just because it will match the rest of his system.

Is it only me who finds this absolutely ridiculous? Don't get me wrong, Sony make some good stuff, but surely the sound quality should be the main factor when buying a receiver?

Well I agree with you 100% tbh - I have always found the best sound to usually generate from different makes of gear all combined into the one system.

In fact I don't know a single individual who has a strong interest in hi-fi gear who doesn't share this view. If you like the sound you're getting from an amp and cd player and they happen to be the same make then fair enough, but to specifically sell a perfectly good amp so that the names match (i.e. nothing to do with the sound) is just basic 'posing' imo.

Hi-fi, in my book at least = mix and match in an effort to hopefully, some day, reach audio heaven. It's what it's about, it's what it's always been about.

It's all a matter of personal taste. I like my gear round good and if it's on display, look good. Easier to keep the wife happy if things match too. Whilst you can mix and match to achieve good sound, I have found generally that buying components from thecsame range sound fantastic together.

This isn't a discussion as to whether components of the same make sound good or bad, this is about whether you'd swap an amp purely because it doesn't have the same name that the rest of your gear does.

In thatbcase...

I would not do this, I start with the amp and build around it. As for the original proposition, with a relatively inexpensive brand like Sony, I doubt it'll make a massive amount of difference to the sound, so he might as well if he prefers aesthetics over "best quality" sound.

I've bought a whole load of matching separates. Although I did demo them and liked the sound..

You should buy what you like for whatever reasons you consider important, as long as you make an informed choice and don't get suckered into buying something you regret. A little off topic maybe, but IMO he's being a bit optomistic with his pricing.
