Just a quick question, thinking of changing over our virgin media internet and phone account to Sky (obviously with a BT line).
Is it possible to keep our old telephone number (from Virgin/NTL) and migrate it over to BT as my mum doesnt want the hassle of changing phone numbers?

thanks.

You ring BT, say you want to connect from Virgin and keep the same phone number they have, takes 10 working days to do the port. Do you already have a BT line that has a dial tone when you plug a phone into it? If not then be prepared to pay £124.99 to reconnected it if its not connected at the exchange and an engineer is needed.

How long ago tho? It does eventually get disconnected from the exchange if its not been used for like 12 months etc.

Hmmm well its not been that long, i'd say around a year.
Rang them up and seems you were right, they want to charge me £125 to reconnect the line even though everything is in perfect order here etc, they just need to flick a switch at the exchange. The line has been used several times and we've switched between Virgin/NTL and BT a few times over the years, this is the first time they've quoted £125 to reconnect. Furthermore, i remember seeing adverts saying it was free to reconnect with BT.
Oh yeh and the line still gets a dial tone when i plug another phone into the master BT socket in our house so surely i shouldnt have to pay?!

It is free to reconnect providing the line is connected at the exchange still which yours isnt otherwise you would still be able to get a dialing tone, just not dial any numbers. The £125 is to cover the cost of the engineering man hours to do the job.

Are you sure they identified the correct line when you called as it doesnt sound like its disconnected from the exchange?

Problem is that if the system says it ceased (disconnected from the exchange) then they will charge you no matter what to put it back on. Openreach will charge BT retail and they pass the charge on to the customer.

Got back in touch with them, no mention of the £125 reconnection charge. All sorted by the sounds of things, just on the phone now whilst they do it!

Aye, got it all done and sorted, line should up and runnin on Thurs 6th with number ported over from Virgin! AFAIK i'm going to have to leave the line to be set up on the system (i.e. so my phone number shows on availability checks) before i can order my broadband, so will probably order Sky Broadband next Saturday, and go from there!

I would ring them back if I were you seen as it takes 11 working days to port the number, there is no chance of having it done for the 6th.

Will ring them tommorow, but she said they've raised the number port thingy, and it should all be completed on Thursday.

I work for BT in the section that deals with number ports in and out of BT, there is no way under the sun that this will be done by Thursday.
