Hey guys, I wrote another post up in the general hardware section mentioning coming into some money and deciding to upgrade a few parts. So I have been thinking of maybe changing my Logitech G930 for a soundcard & headset. I only want to change this if it is a big difference though. I don't know much about soundcards or non USB headsets, and I would like true 7.1 if that is possible. I would be happy to pay 300 - 400 for them together. Can someone maybe let me know what is best for me to get, and is it even worth it?

Thanks

true 7.1 is not possible from audio headphones.

A decent sound card and some headphones would give you the best experience. See the STX or STX II and then see pscho sonny's thread about headsets it's a sticky in this section.

To be honest you can spend less than200 and get a better set up than a pair of G930's an STX and a pair of Creative Aurvana Live would cover it.

TwsT I damn near fainted after reading that. It seems we have converted you to the dark side after all :D

As aforementioned, a dedicated set of headphones and a soundcard (or even an amp/dac combo if you really want to sink some cash into it) will offer a good upgrade over your current. £70 will you you a Xonar DG and CAL!; £110 will get you a SoundBlaster Z and a CAL! - upgraded DAC over the DG, better features, better, wider, clearer sound; The next upgrade in terms of audio performance would be a DT770 for about £120, which pairs well enough with the SoundBlaster Z - prices start to soar after that, but there will still be upgrades in sound quality with each 'rung' that you climb, so to speak.

I have spent too much time listening to things recently. Even in the market for some headphones myself.

I am coming round to the shape of the DT770 but I think I'd prefer the shape of the Q701 or something similar

Which reminds me i'll have to ask you about the differences in all the AKG's so many with such similar numbers, but I won't hijack this thread for that.

Feel free, rids57 and ryan1987 are two other informative forum members to quiz - I've only heard the K550 and Q701 out of the AKG full-size range so cant really comment on their sound from my own pov (can comment on frequency responses and based from reviews, however and on the rather bizarre namings :p).

Apologies for the minor derail OP!
