Changing icons iOS

Noticed today on my iPad that the calendar icon changes the date and day on the home screen, if they can have a icon that updates like this surely it would possible to have icons like widgets or live tiles on wp7 or android that give a bit more information than just number counts. This would improve the information you can see without opening the app itself.

Not sure if it's the case but I wouldn't be surprised if that was an Apple-app only feature.

Undoubtedly though, there's potential for app icons to be used in that manner within iOS.

Yep, unable to change the icon unfortunately.

Nearest availiable is a weather app (name escapes me) which badges the icon with the current temperature
