Is there any way of halving my laptops 4k res automatically when connected to my external monitor?

The reason is that on my desk the laptop is further away so it's hard to see anything and I end up not using the laptop screen at all. But when used as a laptop rather than on my desktop, the resolution is high but still legible as it's closer.

If there's a way to get it to auto switch resolution automatically when attached to an external monitor, that would be great.

Anything like this exist?

Sounds like a perfect candidate for EventGhost:

After running the program and connecting/disconnecting the monitor and looking at the EventGhost log, you should be able to see the triggers you'll need to set. Then it should just be a case of working out the command to change resolution (EventGhost forum and/or Google should help with that), and setting up one that runs when it recognises the monitor is connected, and another than runs when the monitor is disconnected.

Even with no coding skills it only took me an hour or two to set EventGhost on my work PC to send a command to my Dell monitor to change inputs when it recognises the keyboard is unplugged/replugged (my KVM only has DVI and I'm using DisplayPort for both PCs). I'm sure someone else would be able to do it much faster.
