Changing private number plates

Am I being stupid?

I’ve just removed the private plate from one of my vehicles using the DVLA online system.

I want to put a different private plate on the vehicle, but the online form doesn’t recognise the details I’m entering for either of the old number plates together with the current V5 reference number.

Do I honestly have to wait for a new V5 with the original number plate to come through before I can assign the new private plate?

Seems like a waste of time, effort, and paper as they are only going to have to send another V5 in a few days time.

Or have I missed something?

It's also a total nonsense if you want to take a private plate off and put it on another car. The fact it's 2 separate steps means you end up with a period you should update your insurance twice (assuming you have both cars on the same policy). Sod paying two sets of admin fees etc.

you get stiffed multiple times, DVLA and then your insurance company for an admin fee when you update your policy.
