OK, so I have a new WD Scorpio drive sitting next to me destined for the PS3. Am I right in saying that I can go to the settings in the XMB, choose "Backup System", plug in my USB2 HDD and then it will copy all my videos, pics, demos, memory card files to the HDD?

Then I can plug in the new Scorpio and choose "Restore System" and it will copy everything back again from the USB2 drive?

Anyone upgraded their console yet?

First of all check that your external drive is fat 32, then basically thats all you need to do. If you check the FAQs it tells you what is and isnt backup during system restore (think its only DRM'd movies and stuff). All the user settings are saved on the PS3 flash so dont have to worry about that, formatting the new drive takes a couple of mins only.

Well I'm afraid that's not gone according to plan. The screws were too tight on the caddy and I've ended up cross-threading them.

Anyone know where you can buy new PS3 HDD caddies from with fixing screws? LOL.

One of these quotes from avforums may help

If you phone sony and tell them you stripped your screws they *SHOULD* send you a new cage for free, as its considered a "known issue" with the weak screws

Worth a try before you buy one
Drill the heads out (carefully) and you can avoid any damage! Invest in a set of watchmakers screwdrivers. Always use the correct tools!;)

Have you tried blue tack? :p

I ended up cross threading one of the screws on mine when I upgraded, so I used a pair of long-nose pliers to undo it and then tighten it back up which worked a treat!

How did it go with the "Backup System" option?

This is one of the things holding me back from upgrading the HDD at the moment.

I really can't be bothered to redownload PSN stuff again.

Videos, Music and Photos is no problem, as this can be backed up easily anyway.

It's PSN games and Demos I want to know about.
Also "Game Data" such as downloaded patches, as some of them are quite large. I also know I have at least one save game which can't be backed up in the usual fashion (ie, press triangle, and copy to USB key/drive)

If it definitely works with all PSN downloaded stuff, and saves save games plus patches, then I may well go for it too.

I guess it also backs up all users on the HDD?

Well the backup procedure seemed to go OK. It backs the drive up into 4GB file segments as archive_xx.dat. Unfortunately with not putting the new HDD in, I haven't seen how successful the restore was.

Same prob for me. I have already downloaded a lot of my downloadable stuff 5 times (between me and mates) so I dunno what I will do unless the backup backs up the PS3 downloadables, as I can't get them again!!

When i did a backup it backed up EVERYTHING, even movie trailers, personal settings, I had on there and all games, warhawk, tekken etc.etc.

No joy from Sony, the gits. They won't send one out. I've just stuck the disk drive in there manually with no cage. Seems to work OK. The console never gets moved so it should stay put. Getting it out again at some point in the future might be troublesome. Oh well.

Interesting that out of a 250GB drive, 232GB is available and 30-odd GB is taken up by the system, leaving 200-odd GB free.

Just doing my restore now. It formatted the drive again, so anything that's already on the HDD will be gone. Approx 40 minutes to restore 20GB of data.

Seems everyone bought this drive I upgraded with the same one myself today :)

I did have a little problem with cross threading one of the screws but still managed to make it work in the end - so where do you get replacement cages from if Sony won't send them out?
