Changing the fan on psu?

Can this be done? Have managed to get an Accelero S1 cooler as I thought the noise was coming from the graphics card, but sitting and listening to the case, I realised it's the fan in the PSU. Is it possible to fit a quieter fan in there or is it a case of new PSU altogether?
 
It is theoretically possible. It's dangerous to open it since the energy stored in the caps is enough to kill you several times over. If you don't electrocute yourself many times the power leads are soldered to the PSU's PCB. If this was the case you'd have to desolder the existing ones and solder new ones on.
 
To re-iterate whats already been mentioned...

The capacitors in a PSU really can kill you many times over...
The fan is most likely to be soldered on
 
I change Switch Mode PSUs in PC derived equipment often. I have the greatest respect for them. When you see what the inside of the metal cage containing them looks like after they have entered self destruct mode, it only reinforces one's respect. Touch wood, I have yet to hear of anyone being killed many times over, or even just the once which would be bad enough. That said, the little treasures do have the capacity to kill well after being disconnected from the mains supply. Best avoided if you don't know which parts not to touch.

To clarify, I put new guts into the existing cage !

I've done it with my media PC...actually it was a transplant.

My media PC's PSU wasn't a standard one (much smaller) so I removed the guts and put in a Thermaltake TR2 420W inside the smaller case.

I had to cut a few wires and tape them back together. Works fine, no electrocution :cool:
