Changing the Pop kingpins

I seem to be increasingly alone on this one..... am I the only person in the world who doesn't choose (or not choose) a car on the basis of how it would fare in an accident? It's never ever even crossed my mind, and I'm not exactly some brave "fear nothing" kind of person.

im the same.. never crosses my mind when looking at cars how safe the thing is  would limit selection way to much..

Nice pop you have there... so engine sorted.. then what? :)

a frame that isn't made out of recycled spam tins or has the strength of them, is nice to have

Old cars arnt Spam Tins.

They a normally build so solid that they find it hard to dent :p

I have a car from the 80s, Soem of you may have seen it on here once before.
Its interior is held together with Ducktape and it rattles more then a baby rattle :p

But you can make it fun, Being able to belt through trees and scrub not caring or worrying if the paints getting scratched and you can bash it down roads with pot holes made by 4x4s deap enough that if i hit one or dropped a wheel in one i would probably lose an axel :p
As well as it having a 4x4 mode so when there is a mud track you can hammer it through it.

Im gonna miss it when my new car arives :(

Zip, your car isn't old. A '40s Holden would be old, your car is merely 'matured' ;)

***edit***

No, I was going to end up losing the debate, so I chose to erase it from my mind, I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Boooooo!

Lol, I've driven things far "worse" than Jonny's Pop on a daily basis.

But then everyone is different and has different standards of what they can accept or tolerate.

I drove the 205 GTI around for 6 months, a mate wanted to borrow it to go to North Wales, picked it up and had dropped it back within the hour. He refused to use it because he "didn't think it would make it"

Faults listed?

Custs out sometimes at traffic lights
Indicators didn't self cancel
Handbrake efficiency poor

Lol I have driven my Dolomite round with that happening. :p It's all good fun.

Plus I must agree, I don't think one bit about the cars safety when driving or going in one. Doesn't affect my car choice at all.

Mr_White, I actually thought 30-35mpg was quite impressive, I was expecting 20's!

That Pop crashed at 15mph yet the RS6 150mph? :p

Which was precisely my point. You can't just stick up pics of a mangled car and say "there you go, they're unsafe" without quoting the speed it crashed at :)

I'm not sure what speed the Audi was doing, but one article about it reckoned that the police thought "excessive" speed was involved. Probably about 73.64mph then.....As for the pic Mr_White posted, it looks more like something hit it fairly hard on the front-left of the car.

It can't of been anymore than 61mph from what Jonny has said :p :D

That's if it hit something stationary, rather than something else hitting it or hitting something with a higher closing speed :)

And hell, take a look at what happens to a lot of modern small cars when they hit something at ~60mph. Does a fair amount of damage! For example - a Seicento crashing at 40mph.

Is there a website like that of some "Mature car" results :D
There's quite a few crash tests on Youtube of 80's cars but if you watch them prepare youself for a shock as they fold up pretty bad. Watch your legs :D

Put the kingpins back in last night, all tight and shiny and new. It's transformed the car, the steering is tight as it should be, doesn't wander about and the brakes now pull the car up in a straight line as it should do :D

Some pics, cleaned up spindle with the brake back plate bolted up. Decided to clean out and re-pack the wheel bearings while I was at it:

Round the back of that is where the kingpin goes. Drops through the top of the spindle, through the axle and through the bottom bush in the spindle. It's held in place by a big cotter pin and there's a bronze bush under the axle to steer on:

Then I drove it from deepest darkest Kent up to the Frankie and Bennies on the A21 as there were a few hotrods and chops meeting up. Great drive getting it all out of shape on the roundabouts and generally being irresponsible but meh you only live once and it's not as if I was going very fast. There were a couple of really tidy rodded Pilots and a fresh out grey Pop running a modern 4 cylinder and sitting real low over a narrow axle. Quite a few Harleys down there.

Sounds like it was worth it! Should make it even more fun on country road to drive. :D

Now just get that extra power you wanted!

Yeah I'm looking about for a second hand Aquaplane head. I was goign to mill down a spare head I have but I'm worrying about how thin the metal will be and if it will take the combustion pressure. Then whether it will clear the valves etc etc. It's just a lot of money for not much power but meh, it's payday next week, have to see what the postman brings :D
