changing thermal paste

i need to change thermal paste since the cpu reaches around 40 celcius on idle. like a few programs. around 8/16 gb ram used, 10 to 20 % cpu usage.

do i need to wait for the motherboard and cpu cools down before i remove the cooling unit? i have a h100 so its pretty easy to remove. but, does the sockel pins on the motherboard get hot during usage and stick to the cpu? i had other motherboards like rampage III extreme and tried to remove the cpu to add new cooling paste and then i reseated the cpu and there was suddenly 2 gb ram instead of 8. now i have rampage IV extreme. and im going to a lan in october so i want atleast the cpu to be optimal as can be since i will be doing a lot of gaming and downloading generally. does the sockel pins get bent or out of place if i dont wait for stuff to cool down? i mean how do i do this? i dont want anything to be broken since i dont have cash for new equipment if it does.

40 degree idle is fine in this temp, unless you really are desperate I wouldn't be bothered, what are your load temps?

You don't have to wait for it to cool down.

50+ celcius i believe under load. havent done anything with the thermal paste since i assembled the whole thing. HWinfo64 shows around 40celcius on core max and aisuiteII shows cpu 28celcius.

i edited the last post. but wich do i believe? AIsuiteII? or hwinfo64? i dont overclock, yet hwinfo64 show my 3820 is @ 3.8 ghz.

Have to say - it's only recently (that actual good weather arrived), that we can appreciate how "lucky" we are over this end (I'm across the pond in N.I.) to have some natural cooling (due to grim weather), if we had weather like this on a more permanent basis we all might have to fork out a bit more money to get the next set up in cooling ( or maybe not, with constant weather like this we mightn't be housebound playing games as much lol)

Why are you removing the cpu to change TIM?

My temps are nearing yours and I'm under water pretty sure its ok :)
(Have I been doing it wrong?)
