hi all, im gettin limited connectivity errors on most of my pcs on my home network so im wondering how to change each of the cumputers ip address's manually? i will need to do this on vista and xp machines?

thanks in advance

thanks mate, ive found it. it doesnt appear to have made a difference but maybe i will see once ive powered everything down?

tryed the repair function but it allways comes back saying windows could not repair it. ive havent investigated fully, im using 2 hubs and 5 pc's so there is a lot to eliminate :(

im not actually using a router at the moment, just use a 3g usb stick when i need to get online.

im using two netgear hubs. its strange as ive only really noticed the problem since i took one of the machines to my parents house to use their broadband.

yeah amte pretty sure ive set the ranges up ok. ive tryed running ipconfig on this machine (vista) and i see a command box pop up breifly then it disapears?

i didnt think of pinging other machines thanks ill try that

upon running ipconfig/all im getting straight foward info from the xp machine but vista is coming up with some strange stuff. things like tunnel adapter but they both say disconnected. i cant see the computers ip in there, only someting saying autoconfiguration IPv4 address?

hmmm im still getting some serious issues lol, nothing is pinging, mostly timed out but on my vista machine when i try to ping im geting ping transmit, failed - error code 1231

can anyone advise me where to go next? thanks a lot

i have disabled tcp/ipv6 in vista. ive jus managed to ping to the vista machine and get no loss, but trying to ping back the other way i get 100% loss?
also when i change the network from public to private, it jus keeps reverting back to public

hi guys thanks for reading through. the internet sharing is not so much of an issue as i think it will work ok once the network is working - i dont think the 3G router would help as i dont use a dongle i have to have my mobile plugged in to the pc.

the main issue is just file sharing across the network. hardware is as follows

asus p5q pro - vista ultimate
2 x dell optiplex gx 260 - xp
dell optiplex gx 270 - xp media centre edition

they are all running standard network cards

2 x d-link des-1008d's

ive tryed resetting the winsock on the vista machine which hasnt done anything and im still getting error code 1231 from the vista machine, although i can ping from the other pcs back to the vista machine

this is stressing me out so much lol

cheers!

thats a lot for your input mate. im going to follow what youve said and assign ip's manually so leave the gateway blank on the machine which i connect the phone to which is the vista one? the machines on xp are set to the same workgroup but i cant for the life of me find anywhere in vista to set it to the same?

also have you any idea why i cant set the network to private on the vista machine or should that not really be an issue>?

many thanks again for your time

right... thanks to daegan ive managed to put the vista machine on the same workgroup as the others and i can access things across the network etc :)

im having one other issue, i have shared a few folders on the vista machine which are visible on others but the only folder i can get access to is the public one. ive had a look through the sharing menu for the folders i want to give access to and there is just my name up the top so it looks like its only me that can access them? im not sure how to change to public or whatever so anyone can have access like they can the public folder?

thanks all :)

right ive managed to set it to everyone and administrators - checking against the public folder absolutely everything is the same but i still can only get into the public folder from the other pc's :(

in the sharing and discovery section of vista password protected sharing is turned off mate, its the only thing ive turned off out of the list?
