Changings DNS on Asus Router

I've recently swapped out my Vodafone router for the Asus DSL-AC88U. Everything is working nicely and connected to the internet. So thats good!

The only issue is that for some reason Vodafone blocks Imgur, given a lot of people on OCUK use Imgur to host images, this makes for pretty crap browsing!

When using the vodafone router i managed to find a solution which involved changing the default DNS to googles 8.8.8.8.

This means very little to me, but it worked and i was happy. Now i'm using the Asus there are a lot more configuration options and nothing which seem to suggest a DNS address.

I've googled and lots of posts about this seem to run on old firmware and don't replicate my menu settings.

I can see both DDNS and DHCP, but these don't seem to give me what i want.

Any help with be appreciated.

Thanks
Martyn

Hopefully you have the setting. On my sky hub they have removed it to stop you changing it.
I worked around it by having another wifi router in the house serving DHCP where I can set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the gateway to be the IP of the sky hub. If you do similar make sure you turn DHCP off on the ADSL router - you don't want both serving DHCP otherwise you will have issues if they both give out the same IP to different devices in the house.
E.g. wifi with DHCP enabled is on 192.168.0.254 with DNS 8.8.8.8 and gateway 192.168.0.1. ADSL router with DHCP disabled is on 192.168.0.1

I don't like my ISP returning me an ask search result with adverts when I mistype a web address, I prefer to have a page saying not found.

On the Asus I think you do:

WAN >> Connect to DNS Server automatically = No >> enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in the DNS Server 1 & 2 fields that appear

As above it can be found under WAN -> Internet connection. You need to select no for "Connect to DNS Server automatically" for the DNS fields to appear:

There's also more DNS fields under IPv6 which if your ISP supports it, is worth filling out too. Google's IPv6 DNS addresses are:
  • 2001:4860:4860::8888
  • 2001:4860:4860::8844

Thanks guys. For some reason my "Internet Connection" window didn't show that and was pretty sparse, i had to click another button to edit which brought up a load of new fields.

Also @Orcvader i've just told you that i can't access Imgur and you posted an image in imgur!

I'll update those other settings too (if i can find them!)

Hmmm well this is dissappointing. The wifi performance of this seems even worse than the supplied Vodafone router. I keep getting multiple disconnections/slow downs.

Looking on the Asus forums it seems a lot of people have similar issues. My mother in law had one of the old HG612 modems in her loft so i connected that up last night to make sure it worked and i've got it working alright so going to have a think about other options for routers.

The Amplifi HD mesh is one option, or the other is to get one of the Asus RT-88U routers which supports AIMesh (the DSL version doesn't) and then use ethernet backhaul to connect up another Asus router.

I saw someone on here mention that they bought 2 of the Amplifi HD boxes but having read it sounds like they don't support the Ethernet backhaul and i don't know how well that would work.
