Is it possible and can Windows Media Player see them? I'm thinking of trans-coding my DVD collection into AVI to save space, however I use Windows Media Center to playback all my movies and I really do like my chapters, even if not the menus, etc. So can anyone suggest some software that can do this if it is possible?

WMP won't see AVI chapters out of the box. The DiVX codec however can see chapters but you need to use the full DiVX codec pack inc encoder.

You're better off using h264 within an mkv container which does support chapters and is supported by most players. Better quality video too.

Ok, so I go for h264 instead using MKV, Handbrake seems to support that so that's good. Does 'most players' also contain Media Player? I just enjoy being able to kick back and cycle through my movie collection using the media centre shell.

I don't know about MCE as I don't use it but stuff like Media Portal (good MCE alternative) does as it uses MPC from having a word around, perhaps MCE users can confirm!
