Right hopefully buying my new 2.66ghz Macbook pro in Sept, the point is that seeing as it's going to be on my desk a lot, should I take out the battery and plugged into the mains while its not being moved around?

except of course that the new MBP have non-removeable batteries iirc. And even on the unibodies that did, i believe that if you don't have the battery in place, it throttles performance as the charger can't provide enough juice to run it without a battery

Just use and abuse it like I do, and if you need a new battery in 3 years so be it, the chances are you might be considering upgrading by then anyway.

I am tempted to purchase a mbp 13" but just curious as to what would be better to do as I have read conflicting responses from people. Which is better for health?

a) When using with plug it's ok to use at 100% but discharge atleast once a month.

b) When using plug rather than using at 100% charge let it run off battery then plug in when request plug.

I'm guessing that amounts to repeatedly charging and discharging the battery, which isn't going to do much for its longevity. All batteries are only good for a certain number of charge/discharge cycles before they begin to lose their capacity.

I'd say it would be fine to use at 100%. It'd definitely be better than repeatedly charging/discharging it.

Personally, when my MacBook Pro's battery is fully charged, I disconnect the MagSafe connector and use it on battery only until 50% capacity remaining or slightly lower. Afterwards, I charge it up to 100% again and repeat the same method.

I try to only charge it when I'm actually using it which results in less battery cycles if that makes any sense? :p

I've done Macca's first suggestion with my previous MBP (non-unibody) and the battery's life diminished very quickly just before a year of owning it. I've nearly owned my current unibody MBP for a year and using the above methods, the battery life is the same as it was when I bought it :)

So option c) When using plug let charge go down to 50% then plug in? :p

That would be my suggestion :p

My previous post is a summary of what I've thought about Battery University's articles regarding lithium-ion batteries and Apple's advice as Fillado suggested. However, the non-removable batteries are lithium polymer and I don't know how they compare to lithium-ion in terms of charging methods :(

Do a battery reset from time to time and you'll be fine (charge to 100% run down 'till it goes into deep sleep. Switch off and charge for a good five hours)

Think I read somewhere, possibly on Apple's site that the best thing to do is to let it run down until you're prompted to connect the adapter, then let it charge back to 100%, unplug, let it drain again etc.

As said above keeping it at 100% is not a good idea and it doesn't matter how many full cycles it's done, if you are charging at say 50% all of the time then the health will still drop even though the battery hasn't done a full cycle. :)

The above post can be confirmed by Apple's support article :p

I use this method once a month as well as the ones I've posted previously in this thread :)

:p :D

My 2007 MacBook has done 366 charge cycles and the battery is still @ 100% health. It spends most of its life plugged into the mains but thanks to regular battery maintenance it still goes on and on (I get a good four hours of use) when off the mains!
