Charging suggestions? AC? Battery? Both?

I recently got a new VAIO after much research since I gave away my Toshiba from 2002 (still working fine!) and I noticed that it has a battery saving function where it lowers the wear and tear on the battery by only charging it up to a certain amount of your choosing (such as 50% or 80% capacity) and cuts the AC adapter from charging it any further at that point.

What I was wondering is that while this seems like it could be a very good feature and no doubt works to an extent, should I still use the battery and AC adapter together or if possible should I keep taking out the battery and running on AC only when I don't need to be fully portable? I'd like a high capacity battery too but I'm sure as most people know a Vaio battery upgrade is incredibly expensive...

Any input appreciated!
