2 new sapphire models on pre-order at a very cheap price, 164 quid inc VAT. i was thinking about getting an OcUK 8800GTS for 178 but the price of the 2900 got me thinking...

i run games at 1680x1050 and am concerned about the GTS only having 320mb ram whereas the 2900 has 512.

has the 2900 proven itself to be a worthwhile contender to Nvidias offerings now new drivers have been released??
 
The argument is normally the 8800GTS 640 vs the HD2900XT. I wouldent even consider the 8800GTX 320 version to be honest.

If you can get the HD2900XT for that price go for it but i would be very weary. Where are you getting it from, as in a well known shop, aution site etc.

Edit - ummmmm think i misunderstood the op.
 
Never seen any benchmark results for the 2900pro and i don't think there are any yet so cant comment on it, the 2900xt is a good card for the money.

They even do a 1Gb version of the pro.:eek:

Yes the X2900 is a great card and it's ahead in DX9 slightly (dependant on the game) and a behind in DX10. DX10 is "work in progress" with ATI and Nvidia so that will just keep getting better and better with the driver releases ;).

If the 2900 pro's are just toned down X2900XT's then I could see these cards being excellent. If they are like the 8800GTS compared to the GTX with less specs then it might not be as good.

Anybody any info on the new 2900Pro's as in specs?.
 
If you do a search in google, it comes up with a lot of the same info about it being faster than the 8600GTS (overclocked version) but slower than the 8800GTS. No idea on specs, just going by that.
 
CJ let us know more about the upcoming HD 2900 Pro and GT cards that are expected to hit the market in Sept-Oct timeframe. It is R600 based but has only half the number of stream processors at 160. 2900 Pro is expected to clocked around 600MHz and has 256-bit memory interface. HD 2900 Pro is priced at US$249 and will score between 8000-9000 pts in 3DMark2006. There is no info on 2900GT yet. However, the timeframe between 2900 Pro and 2950 Pro is very close (~ 3 months) so AIB partners might not wish to produce in large quantities and consumers would definitely prefer the cooler and better performing RV670 cards.
Edit : We heard 2900PRO has 320 stream processors instead.

So it looks like the Pro is a full R600, but with a 256 bit memory interface.

As the R600 isn't memory bandwidth limited, it could perform quite well and be worth £180!
 
The 2900GT might actually be a good mid range card for around £120.

256Mb and only 240 shaders but ought to easily beat the 8600 cards.

As for the pro it's expected to be 8800 GTS 320mb speed but the extra memory might make it more appealing overall although it looks like it will be the same price.

take them up on that offer then. if it arrives with only 256bit then you can get full refund.

as for performance, having the xt's memory bandwidth halved does not sound good. the 2900xt is poor as it is, being crippled to 256bit is just going backwards.

hopefully its on 45nm process to get its power consumption down.
 
Looks like it will be slower than the 2900XT obviously, but it looks like its just an underclocked XT which should mean a potential baring as these will overclock as high as the XT's or to XT speeds?

Which means it's a bloody bargain for the price. Specially if they can hit XT speeds :D
