i want another tv for the kitchen I can either spend £300 on a new 50" or get a new TV for the living room and move the Sony 55x8509c into the kitchen...

I want 65" but I want to spend less than £1000

I can just snag a cheap Hisense H65B7300UK 65 for the living room £420 wait a year and see if OLED prices come down a bit

Usage is films and general TV, is there much difference in a cheap £420 TV V spending more, would I get something noticeably better? (i see there are deals on LG and other brands for £100 - £200 more)

The 7300 is the same panel as the 7100 (only real significant difference is the stand), the 7500 is a better panel with wider gamut, 120Hz and more advanced HDR (read its more than the very basic box checking level of functionality in the 71/7300). For the £420 the 7300 can be had for with 5yr warranty, it’s hard to argue with that sort of value, it’s only real competition at that price point is Vestel based and unsurprisingly, the 7100/7300 is a much nicer viewing experience, just don’t expect OLED levels of performance and remember you need to spend 2-3x the money to get OLED at this size.

I’ve not spent the time trying to properly calibrate it, even using the visual reference tools, but with a few small tweaks, it’s certainly not bad to watch with 4K or 1080 material (not tried the internal upscaler yet). Out of the box, it suffers in dark scenes as obviously it lacks depth of blacks, and I noticed banding on the opening scenes dust/cloud scenes of Blade Runner 2049, this may be an encoding issue, so I need to pull the physical disk to confirm. Viewing angles also noticeably drop off earlier than I’d like, but I knew most of this going in.

Overall if I walked into my parents and found them watching this, I wouldn’t immediately apply to be emancipated, it’s a very reasonable TV for your average viewer, though probably not ideal for someone who really cares about black levels or calibrated PQ, but then again it’s not intended for that market. If you want better, consider the 7500, but as an entry level screen for people who want to be immersed in content (and avoid painting/decorating a decent chunk of wall), this is about as good as it gets for entry level money and it represents itself better than its price would suggest.
