Cheap AMD System

First one, mobo is overkill. Is Trinity worth it these days?

ive only ever had an e350 APU before, was good for what i wanted at time and played games reasonably well, but not minecraft as until i played 360 edition i saw no point in it when it used to be free..

the other board might be overkill, but was the cheapest bundle i saw and you never know, some time in the future he might be glad or wished he had an overkill board from this day on ;)..

edit: you will be hard pushed to find a decent new amd system with good onboard, i looked myself about 3 months ago and settled on a haswell setup that was £200 above your budget, couldve got better, but was prebuilt and a gift, so maybe he should give up on APU types and get dedicated.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £277.46
(includes shipping: £10.50)

all amd bar ram obviously and be better than an APU ;)

Looking around the net the A8-7600 or A10-7870K look to be good CPUs with decent integrated GPU. I am the same as i dont game massively and have never had to buy a Dedicated GPU.

The above CPUs look like they could handle quite a few games at low to medium settings and also good for everyday computer tasks.

Marrying a decent motherboard too is important and i have read on here that 2133 ram in dual channel is best with these CPUs.

That's exactly what they're for. Acceptable quality at 720p or 1080p.

2400 memory is even better. These APUs are more memory bandwidth limited than anything else. This is why the 7870K is only a bit better in games than the other A10s (and even the A8s).

Come to think of it, looking at the charts in the above has reminded me why bit-tech thought the A8-7600 was the sweetest spot in the Kaveri range. It's only a few FPS behind the top performer but can be had for a staggering £65! (Not on ocuk though unfortunately). Startlingly good value that one. They do say though in the long run the top model is the way to go for gaming.
