Hi guys,

I have a pretty basic computer and have come into a bit of money that I would like to spend to hopefully give a bit of a boost in power. I have roughly £100

The specs are :

Foxconn 945 7MC Series (Socket 775) Motherboard
Pentium 4 3.40GHz Cpu
2gb Crucial PC2-6400 Ram - Newish, would like to leave this be.
Radeon 2600 HD Pro
Plenty Hdd space

I was thinking that a new processor would be a worthwhile upgrade? I am looking at the Core 2's and to be honest I don't have a clue what would be a worthwhile upgrade?

I was also hoping if possible to quieten down the pc a little, it is a bog standard E-machines case and theres quite a large fan in there which is not very quiet to say the least!

So if you could point me in the correct direction I would be very grateful.

My main uses are for internet browsing, instant messaging, listening to music and watching movies; mostly SD but starting to lean towards HD.

I'm guessing this might be your motherboard:

A 2nd hand e6600/e6700 would be a reasonable low cost upgrade.

You could also treat yourself to a new case, take your pick out of these

I am looking for an upgrade to speed the pc up a bit as it seems to lock up a bit and also it seems to have a bit of trouble when there is a few programs open e.g Itunes, MSN and Safari. Also an increase in FPS on games would be an added benefit and finally it would be great to be able to play HD movies without too much worry.

Where would be the best bet to look for a second hand CPU ? I dont know of anywhere other than the bay and the marketplace on here which I dont have access to...

you really need some more ram for starters. Looking at 4gig as a minimum really now days. A e6600 would be a nice upgrade really and can run most things really well. As for GPU, what games do you play?

His motherboard can't take a Q6600.

For gaming 4GB RAM would indeed be a nice improvement.

The bay would probably be your best bet as you don't have MM access yet. :)

I don't game very much as I've always been a console person but I do like to be able to try games once and a while like Half life and I don't worry about perfect graphics, I'm just looking at the best upgrade for the computer in general for the money I have.

ive got some stuff, e6600, 4gb geil ddr2 and 8800gts, you cant access members market or havent set up trust either too, keep an eye out on the bay.
